Is divorce seasonal?

Have you ever noticed that when you hear of someone divorcing, it suddenly seems like there are other people you know who are also getting divorced? Is this a coincidence? According to Live Science, there may be something to the idea that divorce is seasonal and happens at certain times of the year more often than others.

While actual studies are limited, the thinking behind the research is rather sound and makes good sense. It is thought that the majority of divorces are filed in March and August. While there is no way to find out the exact reason for this, it is thought that these months represent times after seasons where marriage trouble may become more apparent.

For example, March falls after the holiday season and during a time where there is little going on related to family outings or other activities. August is similar, coming after the busy summer season. They both fall at times that also come before the traditional family time seasons of summer vacations and holiday celebrations. During these lulls, you may be more likely to reflect on y our marriage and see the issues. Plus, you may be more likely to take action before you head into summer or hit the holiday season.

So, if you happen to notice that a lot of people you know are getting divorced at these times of the year, then you can probably bet it is not a coincidence. It seems the seasonal nature of divorce may be more reality than myth. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
