Does my social media activity matter in divorce?

Anyone who is going through a divorce in Lexington, no matter how painful it may seem might not realize how their social media activity may affect their settlement. Social media platforms may seem like appropriate places to vent about your soon-to-be ex-spouse and divorce situation. But if you are not careful, you could end up trying to justify your actions in court.

Emotional outbursts are common in divorce. So is bickering, although it is not advisable for you to do so. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and other social media platforms are no place for you to share personal and private information, especially about your ending marriage. If you cannot stay off social media, at least consider the following pointers about your activity.

Keep it positive

Refrain from posting negative information about others, including yourself and spouse. Anything you post online might become evidence. Keep in mind that during the proceedings, your spouse may not play fair and might bash you on their social media accounts. Do not stoop to their level or you risk getting caught up and losing out in the settlement once the courts become involved.

Be selective about posts

Do not share anything online that you do not want your ex-partner to see or learn about. Do not fool yourself into thinking that they will not find out. You never know who your friends know who also know your spouse. Anything that you post online and gets back to your partner can become their leverage in the divorce negotiations. According to Prevention Magazine, you never know who is watching what you do online, especially on social media that could backfire on you in the future when you least expect it.

If you and your spouse are on amicable terms, it is a good idea for you both to decide if and how you want to announce your divorce online.
