What is OSHA?

If you work in Kentucky, then the chances are good you have heard about OSHA. This is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. According to OSHA, it was developed and set up under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. The agency is responsible for keeping you safe on the job. Ideally, OSHA works hard so that you never have to make a workers' compensation claim because you will, hopefully, be protected through OSHA regulations that prevent accidents.

Of course, accidents still happen despite every effort to prevent them. That is why OSHA also conducts reviews of accidents and implements new regulations based on those reviews. In addition, while your employer is responsible for following all applicable safety regulations and rules, mistakes can still be made. To combat this and prevent accidents, OSHA also conducts reviews of worksites to ensure safety guidelines are being followed.

OSHA also publishes plenty of literature and provides assistance to employers to help them make their workplaces as safe as possible for you and your coworkers. It even offers assistance in some areas to make it easier for your employer to keep accidents from occurring.

The Department of Labor is over OSHA and ensures it is being operated properly. As with any federal law, though, there are exceptions to what types of employers are regulated by this agency. Generally, any employer with 50 or more employees must follow OSHA regulations. You will know if your employer must be compliant if you see posters or other documents from OSHA in your workplace and receive OSHA safety training.
