Using employee education to prevent scaffolding falls

For construction employees in Kentucky, the inherent risks of the industry can provide considerable incentive to adhere to safety policies to protect one's life. While slips, trips and falls are one of the most common injuries in construction work, scaffolding can be especially dangerous as it is often suspended off of the ground. Workers who experience an injury from falling off of scaffolding are often subject to prolonged disability and discomfort depending on the severity of their fall. In the worst cases, a scaffolding fall could result in death.

According to the United States Department of Labor, some of the most persistent and dangerous hazards associated with falls from scaffolding include the following:

  • Falling debris, tools and building materials.
  • Falls from height without adequate protection.
  • Electrocution depending on the placement of scaffolding in regards to electric components.
  • Instability of scaffolding that has not been properly inspected and secured.

Fortunately, with proper education, employees can stay safer on the job and avoid being the victim of an unnecessary fall from scaffolding. suggests that employees always inspect the condition of scaffolding before starting any type of work. They should also make sure that it is not placed too close to live electricity and that building materials moving between places will not interfere with electrical currents. Scaffolding should be properly selected to provide adequate support for the type of weight it will be holding and the type of work that will be taking place. Workers should identify access and exit points and keep these areas accessible at all times.
