Can you protect yourself from workplace hazards?

Perhaps you have heard of workplace accidents in widely publicized news stories around the nation. However, did you know that common workplace hazards can be present just about anywhere no matter the industry? While certain jobs, environments and industries do have a higher percentage of risk in Kentucky, your safety may be threatened by a variety of circumstances that may be overlooked as acceptable. Protecting yourself from workplace dangers is something you can more effectively do with a brief education about what red flags to watch for.

According to the Safety and Health Magazine, certain workplace hazards have been identified repeatedly by consultants with the National Safety Council. These hazards, while common and often ignored, can pose a significant threat to you if not addressed before it is too late. These hazards include the following:

  • Forklift operation: Many forklift workers may feel that they have to work quickly or may fail to regularly maintain their machine. If you work around a forklift or operate one, you should always be aware of your surroundings and adhere to protocols put in place by your employer for ultimate safety.
  • Working above ground: If your job requires you to work at height, it is imperative that you wear the proper safety gear. Any gear you are required to wear including harnesses and helmets should be regularly inspected to identify any damage that could compromise its effectiveness while you are using it.
  • Handling chemicals: Depending on the industry you work in, you may have access to chemicals or be required to use them for completion of assigned tasks. If this is the case, be sure that you understand the risks of the products you are working with and how to properly use them. Wear proper safety equipment and pay vigilant attention when handling any type of chemical.

Other risks include electrical extension cords, subpar housekeeping, incorrect logout/tagout completion and working in confined spaces. The information in this article is intended for educational purposes only and should not be taken as legal advice.
